REHABILITATION

Careful planning and rehabilitation is required to preserve the environment around a mine.

Unfortunately, the angles of overburden dumps created by the bucketwheel excavators are too steep for effective natural revegetation. Methods of dumping overburden at angles of between 15 and 20 degrees when the dumps are reprocessed are currently under investigation. If this can be achieved, the area will be allowed to revegetate naturally.

According to the Minerals (Prospecting and Mining) Act of 1992, all infrastructure and equipment must be removed from the mining licence area after the licence expires, unless it is required for an alternative post-mining use.

The Ministry of Environmental and Tourism is currently drawing up a land use plan for the Sperrgebiet, which will outline possible land uses after mining in the area is complete. The possibility of leaving infrastructure in the mining area for future tourism or aquaculture activities will be investigated.
