Namdeb's primary training and development objective is to develop the Namibian people. The company is the second largest employer in Namibia, after the Government and therefore focuses on recruiting professional, dynamic, competent staff members into its organizational structure.

The company has initiated the Namdeb Bursary Scheme, the In-Service Bursary Scheme and the Namdeb Grant Scheme to help develop Namibian citizens. These schemes support developing the Human capital of the country and contribute to Vision 2030.

Namdeb Bursary Scheme

The renowned Namdeb Bursary Scheme was first introduced in 1979. The scheme allows meritorious Namibian students the opportunity to receive tertiary education, in mining related disciplines, enabling them to fill positions within Namdeb.

The Namdeb Bursary Scheme covers full academic fees (including tuition, accommodation, meals, traveling and incidental expenses). An interest-free computer loan is also available to the bursars.  As part of their business and practical training, bursars are required to spend eight weeks of vacation employment in Oranjemund every year.

The annual intake of bursars in selected fields is directly linked to Namdeb's five-year labour forecast. By determining future Namdeb labour needs, the bursars are selected to compliment the business needs.

The Namdeb Bursary Scheme offers meritorious students and Namdeb employees the opportunity to apply for a bursary in the following disciplines for the 2008 academic year:

¨        Mechanical Engineering

¨        Electrical Engineering

¨        Control & Instrumentation Technicians

¨        Metallurgical Engineering

¨        Chemical Engineering

¨        Mining Engineering

¨        Geology

In-Service Bursary Scheme

The In-Service Bursary Scheme allows Namdeb employees with exceptional work performance to obtain tertiary qualifications through full-time studies, while still receiving partial salaries and other benefits. The In-Service Bursary Scheme is also in line with Namdeb's Affirmative Action and Succession Planning initiatives and attempts to improve the retention of skilled employees.

Namdeb Grant Scheme

The Namdeb Tertiary Grant Scheme is a means of awarding meritorious students assistance towards obtaining a tertiary education. The Scheme supports the Company’s business philosophy to provide assistance towards the upgrading of skills within Namibia. The Grant does not pay off the outstanding balance but merely assists towards payment of tuition fees.
